Ganging and Derating Information

WHAT IS GANGING ?

Ganging is the mounting of two or more controls side-by-side in a series of connected wallboxes.

WHAT IS A SIDE SECTION/FIN BREAKOFF?

A scored section along each side of the mounting plate/fin designed to be removed to facilitate ganging.

Ganging and Derating for Lutron Wallbox Dimmers

Vareo, Nova T*, Nova, Centurion - may be ganged without removing the side sections - no derating required. Side sections can be removed to save space or have ganged units fit into existing wallboxes - derating required (side sections must be removed if using VWP Vareo wallplates for Vareo wallplates for Vareo dimmers or tap switches).

Lumea2, Maestro, Diva, Skylark, Ariadni, Faedra, Glyder, Rotary - must remove side sections to gang - derating required.

Athena - no removable side sections - no derating required when ganged.

WHAT IS DERATING?

The reduction of the maximum capacity (load) a dimmer can reliably handle when the side sections (fins) are removed.

Planning a Multigang Installation

STEP 1

Determine if the side sections are to be removed or to remain intact (applicable to Vareo, NovaT*, Nova, Centurion).

Consider: width of application, load, number of wallboxes required, product type and side section breakoff options

Control Widths (for determining width of a ganged installation)

Control Size Width
Side Sections Intact  One Side Removed Two Sides Removed
Small 2 3/4"  2 1/4" 1 3/4"
Large 4 1/2"  4 1/8" 3 5/8"
  • All Vareo models are considered "small" controls
  • For control sizes of Nova T* and Nova dimmers:
    • 600W and 1000W models are "small" controls
    • 1500W and 2000W models are "large" controls
  • For control sizes of Centurion and Athena dimmers
    • 600W and 1000W models are "small" controls
    • 1500W and 2000W models are "large" controls
  • All Lumea2, Maestro, Diva, Ariadni, Faedra, Glyder and Rotary models are considered "small" controls

STEP 2

Use the capacity derating charts to determine maximum permissible loads for each control in the installation if side sections will be removed.

STEP 3

Determine number of wallboxes required and plan control placements in gang (see charts below):

WALLBOXES REQUIRED - All side sections intact

  Number of Small Controls
Number of Large Controls 1 3 5
0 0 1+1* 4+1* 7+1*
1 1 5 8 11
2 4 7 10 12  13
3 6 10 11  13 14  16
4 9 11  12 14  15 17  18

*Note: When ganging an even number of small controls with no side sections removed, use wallboxes with tapped ears as shown below. Do not use plastic rings or gangbox covers. Space an additional wallbox 3/4" apart from the other wallbox(es). A 3/4" chase nipple is recommended as a spacer between the wallboxes.

Example: wallbox arrangement required for gang of 4 small controls, side sections intact:

Assembling the Controls

When ganging any combination of small and large controls, place a small control on one extreme end of the gang, and a large control at the other end of the gang. Use center and offset mounting holes as necessary.

WALLBOXES REQUIRED - All inside sections removed

  Number of Small Controls
Number of Large Controls 1 3 5
0 0 2 4 6
1 1 4 6
2 3 6 8 10
3 5 8 10 11  12
4 7 10 11  12 13  14

Removing Inner Side Sections

When removing side sections, remove only inner side sections. Do not remove side sections on outer ends of the gang.

Assembling the Controls

When ganging any combination of small and large controls, place a small control on one extreme end of the gang and a large control at the other end of the gang. Use center and offset mounting holes as necessary.

STEP 4

Determine the multigang wallplate requirements (Vareo, NovaT*, and Nova).
